Putting Off the Inevitable

Posted by cokelady

But more on that later. Ha!

Yesterday I told the kids we were going to have what they like to call "a crazy day." That's a day where they stay in their pj's all day long. We've only had a few of them and they're pretty tough to pull off. Sam is usually dressed in full cowboy garb (occasionally with layers of cop stuff or Spiderman costomes over the top) before any body else is even out of bed. We were going to be leaving at about 2:00 to go into town and do some shopping before we met the VanDeventers at that great mexican restaurant in Old Town at 4:30. We'd have a nice dinner with them, then go to prayer meeting at 6:00. That was the plan anyway, so I figured we'd just stay in our pj's until after lunch, then get into our church clothes sometime before 2:00. Sam lasted until all of about 8:30 before he ran into the closet and came out looking like this...

So Sam was suited all day long! Ha!

Joe woke up not feeling good. You can always tell if Joe's faking or not by how he responds to meal time. He didn't eat a bite for breakfast or lunch. It was for real! He was a little feverish, but mostly just extremely lethargic. He laid around all through devotions and breakfast time, sat down and did his school, then laid around throughout the rest of the day. Katie did much better in school (thank the Lord!) and we were done before noon.

As we were walking out the door at 2:00 we got a call from Brother VanDeventer. They were running late and wouldn't be able to meet us for dinner--we'd just meet up with them at church. Bummer! We went ahead and loaded everybody up and headed to town, as scheduled. By the time we got there all of the kids were sacked out in the van. I'm not sure any of them have been feeling just real good the past few days, but Joe was the only one who was obviously ailing. Anyway, I ran in to Bed, Bath & Beyond while James waited in the van with the slumbering children. I cruised the whole store just sort of browsing and looking for ideas. Didn't find a whole lot. But I did find just what I was looking for. A two-tiered-lazy-susan-tray-thingie for my spices and a lid rack. Mom said they're kind of hard to find, so I went ahead and just bought them.

We then went to Wal-Mart and James stayed in the van so the kids could sleep some more while I ran in. Found that they had a lid rack for $3 less than what I had just paid (ooooh! I hate that!), but they didn't have the spice thingie. I picked up all of the stuff that was on the list, but I can't remember much of what it was!

We went to eat at Cracker Barrel since it was close to the church. Joe was feeling some better and ate a bowl of soup. And some applesauce. And Katie's applesauce. And a biscuit with jelly and... Ha! He'd been missing out on food all day, you know?! He still wasn't feeling the greatest, but good enough to eat finally.

We had a really good prayer meeting and it was a pleasure to have the VanDeventers with us. They are always such a joy to be around! We just love them soooooo much. Who doesn't?! After service we went out to Denny's so the Vans could eat the dinner they had skipped in order to make it to church. We had a nice lo-o-o-o-o-o-ong visit there due to some very poor service! Ha! Afterwards the V's said they wanted to drive out and see our house. Wa-Hoo! How fun is that?! So they followed us up into the mountains so they could see where we live. The only bummer is that it was dark and they couldn't really see WHERE we live or the great view or anything. Oh well. They seemed to think the house was great, but wondered how on earth we ever found this place! Ha! It isn't exactly on the way anywhere, I guess! Anyway, they brought us a housewarming gift (Ah! I forgot to take a picture of it--I was going to post it!), an engraved stone with a phrase about faith etched into it. And, of course, they brought something for each of the kids. Just what they need--more toys! Ha! The VanDeventers are soooooo thoughful and I was truly touched that they cared enough to drive the 30 minutes out here just to see our little house--and give us a gift for it! ~sigh~ I wanna be just like them when I grow up. :-)

After they left I figured it was time to get to work on Grace's wedding gift. Can't say too much just yet, of course, but I will show it to you...

HAPPY WEDDING, GRACE!!!
The box was so big I had to cut two great big long pieces of wrapping paper and tape them together to be able to wrap around the whole thing! I fought with that dumb thing and the ribbons (they never would really un-woober) for probably 30 or 40 minutes! Ha! But in the end, I love it. Simply because it's just so big and bright and happy and... Well, just great! I mean, with a gift that looks so happy it doesn't even matter what's inside of it, right?! (Just keep that in mind, Grace! Ha!) I'm so glad she picked red and yellow for her colors. Makes for such a cheery gift. Lots better than all the white and silvery paper it will be surrounded by at the wedding. :-) And I even managed to rummage around in the garage long enough to find the box that had those great Coca-Cola cards that Emilee had made for me several months ago. Nothing like a Coke wedding card, right?! I hear there are lots of nonconventional things about this wedding, so I thought I'd follow suit. :-)

Today Joe was feeling lots better, but still not fully back to himself yet. Katie is the one who's been lethargic all day long. I put the kids down for quiet time this afternoon and immediately after I told them they could get up she was right back in bed, fast asleep! Slept for at least 2 or 3 hours.

Today I re-sorted my pantries and cabinets. Now that I have that lazy susan thingie all of my spices and baking stuff finally found a place. I moved and rearranged some things, trying to make room for some more stuff to be unpacked into the cabinet on the far right. It's so hard to not have an office or any place to keep the things that used to be in it! So if I can use that one big cabinet for some office stuff it will help a whole lot.

James was gone throughout most of the day. Last week Joe had been playing with the seatbelt in the van and pulled the thing a-a-a-a-all the way to the end. It got stuck and broke the mechanism, so James took it down and had it replaced today. He explained to Joe just how much it cost and just how sorry Joe would be if it ever happened again. ;-) It won't. Joe has no problem with true repentance!

After the dealership finished up on the seatbelt James ran over to Sears and picked up my new stove! The upgraded one that they are letting us have in exchange for the damaged one we had before. :-) So he brought that home and we unloaded it and got it put into place. ~si-i-i-i-igh~ It's beautiful. It's been over two months since I've had a stove and I'm soooooo happy! James had to run back into Albuquerque to pick up his suits from the cleaners, so he brought home a Papa Murphy's pizza for dinner. It was great, but I felt rather disloyal. I mean, I had had every intention of christening this new oven with a Totino's pizza! Ha! That's okay. The Papa Murphy's was good and the cinnamon ring was fantastic. After we get back from the wedding we'll go buy some meat and such so that I can actually COOK now that I have a new stove! :-)

And now comes the part where I explain the title of this post. ~sigh~ I have to iron. There's just no way around it. I haven't ironed a stitch since we left the motel (how long has that been?! Two weeks? Two and a half?) and we're running low on clothes. It hasn't mattered because we've been wearing nothing but work clothes. But now we're going to Arizona and will be seeing real people and have to look decent. ~sigh~ So it's got to be done. I have all of the laundry done and piled high the entire length of the couch. There are three piles: the Got-to-Have-it-for-the-Trip pile, the Might-Could-Use-it-on-the-Trip pile, and the Don't-Need-it-This-Weekend-and-Ain't-Gonna-Touch-it-'til-We-get-Home pile. They're all sitting there staring at me. So what was I to do?! Why, sit down and blog, of course!!! But they're not going away and we can't go to Arizona until I do something about it. So now's the time...

But here's a parting shot for you...

That's how we found Sam sleeping last night. :-)

Have a great night! I look forward to seeing lots of you at the wedding!!! Especially you, Gracie Girl! :-) (As if she really has time to sit and read the blogs right now! Ha! Somebody out there tell her I said so, okay?!)

Hershey Housing, Kid Chaos & So On

Posted by cokelady

What do you know!!! Posting on back-to-back days! Whoa!!!

Today has been quite a roller coaster. I had every intention of having a great, "regular" day: breakfast, devotions, school, then some more unpacking and such. We made it through breakfast without a hitch, but that's about it! Ha! James headed to town early and wanted me to make some calls right away so he'd know what steps to take when he got back home. There were several situations we were dealing with, but the most trying was...

Hershey Dog. Again. ~sigh~ I love that dog. But he does make it difficult to make plans! Ha! I'm hoping we can make some friends here in the mountains, perhaps some who would enjoy poodle sitting from time to time when we travel. That would be sooooo nice. We haven't had time to make any such friends as yet, so we figured we'd just have to bite the bullet and actually board the dog somewhere while we're gone to Arizona this weekend. So I started making calls...

These crazy people want $97 to get him current on his shots and all that junk! Can you imagine?! It was, like, $30 in Texas!!! I was appalled. I become rather vocal when I'm appalled and the lady on the other end of the line was ever so patient as I informed her of how ludicrous those prices were. But what are we to do?! Nobody can board the dog unless he has current shots. So I sighed a deep, frustrated sigh and asked the next question: how much do you charge to board a small poodle? That crazy woman had the nerve to tell me $17 a day!!! Can you imagine?! I went a little bazerk at that. "You can't be serious... Are you serious?! No way!!! That's how much they charge to board BIG dogs back in Texas!" (At this point the poor lady was probably already tired of hearing about "back in Texas...") I then apologized and asked her to please not take any of my comments personally--I realize that these absurd prices aren't her fault, I'm just in shock. She said, "Oh, I'm just sitting here smiling to myself because... well, you haven't called very many kennels yet, have you?" Nope, this was the first one I called. She informed me that they are one of the cheapest in town and that many of the others charge $30 or $35 a night, plus food, plus play time (?!), plus... !!! For a DOG!!! Good grief, on a lucky night we can get a motel room for our entire family (AND THE DOG!) for $35!!! I only thought I was in shock before. "That's NUTS!!! Who in the world would pay that kind of money to board a dog?!" "They do it," she said. "Well, we don't!," I said. "This dog will just have to stay home alone or something--that's outrageous!" I left off any more "back in Texas" talk and thanked her for the information, preposterous as it was.

I tried to call James on the cell phone to tell him to buy a dog door TODAY because this dog is going to have to stay home while we're gone, but he didn't answer the phone. In the meantime, I called Mom to ask for the phone number of the place we'll be staying in Phoenix. It's a condo or suite or some such thing that we'll be sharing with Mom & Dad while we're there. Mom said she was sure they wouldn't allow pets (as if I didn't already know) and suggested I call Aunt Kay and ask if Hershey can stay at her house and play with Duke. "Mother!!! Are you crazy?! While they've got wedding madness going on and people coming out their ears??? There is no way I could possibly ask that!!! The last thing we need is for me to go ask some stupid thing like that and us lose what little family we have left because of it!!! ...But if I can't come up with any other plan... will you call and ask her???" Ha! I knew it was a waste of time to call the motel, but I dialed it anyway...

"Hello, my name is Rebekah Horne and we have reservations to stay at your motel this coming weekend. I already know the answer to this question--I mean, any place named 'The Lodge at Sun Ridge'--but I have to ask it anyway because I'm so terribly desperate... Is there any way possible that you would allow a cute, sweet little brown poodle to stay at your motel???" I clinched my teeth and waited for the rejection. I've never been able to handle rejection very well.

The voice on the other line said, "Sure."

"WHAT?!
You will?!?!?!? Are you serious?!"

"Yeah, that'll be fine--just clean up after him outside, okay?"

"Are you for real???
Is there any kind of a pet fee or anything?"

"How 'bout $1 a day?"

"$1 a day?!
Oh, you are the most wonderful man in the world!!! You have no idea! These crazy people want $97 for shots for the dog and $17 a night to board him--that's more than we paid for the dumb dog!!! Oh, you have noooooo idea how wonderful you are!!! What is your name?"

"John."

"John!
I'm going to have to hug you when we get there--thank you sooooooooo much!!!!"

"No problem, Ma'am. All hugs accepted."

~SIGH~ Oh, the wave of relief!!! And it doesn't even bother me that good old John thinks I'M a crazy lady. He actually said since we'll only be there a few nights he wouldn't charge us anything at all for the dog. WHAT A BLESSING!!! A stupid little thing to a lot of folks, but when you're the one looking at paying $97, plus $17 4 or 5 times--it's a BIG BLESSING!!! I was sure to thank God a whole lot. And John. So now we'll have 7 people and a dog staying together in a room that was intended for 4 people. Fun, fun, fun! :-) The most important thing is that we'll not be paying anything extra for the dog AND we haven't severed any more family ties. Ha!

All of the above occupied the first hour of my day. Afterward we finally got into devotions, then headed straight into school. It was a total disaster. Oh my goodness--it was the worst day of school we've had in AGES! Sam did okay, but he only does school for a very short time, then goes off to play while the other finish up. Joe did alright today, but Katie was a wreck. She was just lazy and didn't want to do her work, so she spent forever one this one simple little page while Joe worked through all of his subjects and finished up. It's always a race between to two of them and they try to finish Reading Comprehension and move on the English before the other does, or whatever subject comes next. When Katie isn't winning (at ANYTHING) she falls apart. She gets soooooo frustrated and breaks down into tears and the whole "I'm no good at this" depression junk. Oooooh, I hate that!!! So then I break down and... Ha! I can usually work her through things and she can sort of cope and go on. Not today. I was ready to string her up. It went on for a couple of hours, during which the boys were rough and rowdy and noisy and my nerves were just shot. Things continued to spiral out of control and get worse and worse until I realized it was nearly 2:00 and nobody had eaten lunch yet. I threw some sandwiches on the table and told them to eat quick--they were going to bed! And that's exactly what we did: lunch and nap time. Unfortunately, nobody actually took a nap. Still, the quiet time was good for all of us and allowed me to get some more things done around the house.

Sadly, the quiet time didn't seem to improve anybody's attitudes or responses, so most of the rest of the day was unpleasant for all of us, too. ~Ugh~ I hate days like that!!! It was awful.

The good news is that I got two more boxes unpacked (Ha! Big deal!) and James brought home a new dishwasher for me! Wa-Hoo! I tried to use the other one a few days ago and the results were nothing short of grotesque, as was the case with every other appliance in this house. We spent the afternoon working on getting the new dishwasher installed and making sure we didn't have any leaks or anything. I think everything is working great and I'm sooooo happy! I now have a nice, clean, white dishwasher--that actually works! It's a really, really nice one, too. :-) What a good husband I have!

Unfortunately, the kids continued their streak of badness (I wonder if they're in some sort of secret competition?) while we were working and then BOTH parents were at wit's end by the time we finished with the kitchen project. I cooked some Totino's in the toaster oven (my stove should be coming in tomorrow!), fed the little rats, then we had family devotions and put them to bed at 8:00 tonight! We had a good prayer and I played some nice, soothing instrumental worship music while they went to sleep. I'm hoping the prayer and music helped us all! Ha! I'm trusting we'll have a much better day tomorrow. But on the bright side... Hershey isn't going to cost us an arm and a leg this weekend!!! :-)

That's the extent of our day. Seems like there was something else that happened, but all I can think of are the dog, the bad kids, and the dishwasher. I know I'm wiped out. Going to call it a night. Maybe a good night's sleep will help us all, too! Time will tell!!!

Just Lazin' Around

Posted by cokelady

No--really! That's what I've been doing! It's been GREAT!!! After all that time in the motel I thought I'd NEVER want another day off in my whole life. I was dying for something to do. Well, after all of the moving, I'm dying for a day off! Ha! Crazy, how you always want what you don't have... ;-)

So yesterday I got up, we had devotions, the kids played and I blogged. I couldn't get motivated all morning, so I just waited until afternoon to tackle the job I've been dreading: cleaning the bathroom and "moving in" in there. Jamey had already cleaned it and I was AMAZED at the difference after she was done. It was like night and day! But this bathroom was sooooo gross that I spent two or three hours cleaning it AGAIN and I couldn't believe all of the muck and guck that was still in there even after the first cleaning. I usually just use my rags when I clean, but I couldn't bear the thought of continuing to use the rag that was being contaminated by all the gunk, so I opted to use paper towels. I kid you not--I used half a bottle of cleaner and an entire roll of paper towels, and then some! YUCK! I'm tellin' ya', you ain't never seen gross 'til you've seen this bathroom. If this move has taught be anything, it's that the people we bought the house from in Andrews weren't nearly as dirty as I used to think they were! Ha! Anyway, I got the bathroom closet all cleaned up and got our bathroom boxes unpacked. It's already been so nice to not have to rummage through boxes to find things! I took all of the gross towels racks and everything down and hung my own cute little "BATH" and "TOWEL" hooks and the wire rack that I keep my fresh towels rolled up on. This bathroom is long and narrow and it's hard to find the wall space necessary for my things in there, but I made room. ;-) It's going to be really cute when we're done with it. I'm going with blue and yellow again, of course. There's just nothing like a bright, cheery, CLEAN bathroom. :-)

That is the sum of my labors yesterday. Three hours in the bathroom. After that I sat down with the kids and put together a Clifford puzzle, then played two or three rounds of Memory with them. They were losing big time, so Katie and Joe decided to team up and combine their matched cards to make a bigger stack. In the end, I tied with 'em. Ha! That'll teach 'em!

After Memory got old I went into the kid's closet to pick out another game or puzzle, but somehow none of the kid stuff looked good to me. So I ended up grabbing my Coca-Cola puzzle and dumping it out on the table! Crazy, hu?! Like I have time to put a puzzle together!!! But amazingly enough, I did. :-) The kids helped me and they actually did really good. Even Sam got a few pieces. Of course, I had to unlatch several mismatched pieces along the way, but he did get some in the right places, too. The Coke puzzle is only 500 pieces, so it just took a couple of hours and ~voila~ we were done!

Got all of the kids bathed in our freshly cleaned bathroom (it feels sooooo much better!) and put to bed, then I sat down and played a game on the computer for a little while. Just felt like loafing, you know?! Thus the new template. (I liked the one with the Twinkies better, but couldn't get it to work, for some reason...) Then I remembered I had Sunday School to prepare for, so I got to work on that. A sheep lesson with sheep crafts: cotton balls and macaroni wool.

This morning we had 30 or 35 people in Sunday School. Good service. James preached a message on people selling out (like Esau and Samson), then tonight he finished up with a message about being NOT for sale (like Joseph and Naboth). Good stuff. This morning we had a denominational pastor visit our service who is looking to find a building his congregation can rent. He seemed like a very, very nice man and he seemed to really enjoy the service. We're going to pray about the possibility of renting to them. There are pros and cons to everything, but it sure would help with expenses. And who knows--maybe this guy and some of his people would stick around for our services and end up getting Church-of-God-ified! :-)

We came home today and everybody fell into bed. Couch for me. I was brought up that that's the proper place for a Sunday nap. :-) And it was SUCH a good one! One of those where your body is just aching to lay down and sleep for a little while and when you finally hit the pillow it just feels soooooo good... ~sigh~ It was terrific. :-) Got up and got everybody ready for service and headed out. We have church at 5:00 Sunday evenings and I LOVE it. It just works out so great at that time. We had a good service tonight, too, with a wonderful season of prayer to begin with and a really good song service. It was a blessing I really needed.

We grabbed a bite at the Panda Express (can you believe I've learned to choke down Chinese food after all these years?! Only at Panda and only the orange chicken. I've actually developed quite a taste for it!), then headed home. So it's been a great Sunday! Good service, nice afternoon nap, good service, kids to bed, loaf around, blog... ~sigh~ Life is grand.

Okay, a few pictures...

This is what it looked like outside when I woke up yesterday morning. Ain't it purty?! Yes, Jenna, New Mexico can be beautiful, too! I've always had the same impression you have--it's just a flat, hot, ugly, desolate wasteland. And it is in most places! But for some reason unknown to me, God has seen fit to put me in the mountainous, cool, beautiful, Colorado-ish part of it! :-)

Here's Sam with the finished puzzle last night. What fun!

Katie was cold after her bath, so she curled up by the fire. And promptly fell fast asleep! Had to be toted to her bed. By the way... how do you get all that black smudgy stuff off the bricks, Mom? We haven't had a chance to work on it a whole lot yet, but James tried the other day with only minimal success. Help???

And here's good ole' Hershey Dog with his toy duck. I can't get him to sit back and let me take his picture with it. Any time he has it he wants to PLAY and he's not going to be sitting still anywhere!

Back up to the picture of Sam... Take a real close look at those eyes... NOTHIN' BUT TROUBLE, hu?! That kid. He's been wearing me out lately (he's soooooooo bad!), but he's also been cracking me up. At Panda Express several weeks ago I read his fortune cookie slip to him: YOUR DREAMS WILL COME TRUE, it said. So I asked him, "What did you dream last night, Sam?" He thought a minute and said, "Nuthin'." Later on he was telling James about his fortune cookie. "Know what mine said, Dad? Mine said, "What'd you dream last night--nuthin'!" Ha! What a nerd!

After nap time a couple of days ago Sam came to me and said, "Hey, Mom, you know what? When we're in our bedroom, there are three people watching us. Know who? God... Jesus... and Matt Dillon!" Ha! Ha! Ha! I was expecting the Holy Ghost, but since Matt Dillon is hovering over Joe's bed in there... Ha!

Sam has this nasty little habit of saying things that he knows will get Joe all riled up and angry. His eyes just dance the whole time, too--he loves every minute of it. Yesterday I heard Sam's voice, but couldn't hear what he was saying. I didn't have to though because Joe's frustrated response told it all: "SA-A-A-A-AM!!! The Lone Ranger did not electricute Tonto--and he doesn't kill good guys all the time either!!!" Ha! That kid is such a creep!!!

Katie and Joe have been providing their own entertainment, but that'll have to wait for another time. Some day I'll have to write up a whole post on Honest Joe Horne. If a kid has ever been honest to a fault, it's Joe. The kid drives us nuts!!! Ha! Anyway, I guess that's all for now. Tomorrow I'm going to unpack a few more boxes of kid stuff and see if I can find places for all of it in the kids' room and closet. It's already starting to get pretty full in there! We weeded out a BUNCH of stuff before we moved, but still... The boys and Katie had seperate rooms, each with their own closets of course, a whole room just for playing in (full of way too many toys!), and all of their school and craft stuff in my office. That's a total of four rooms and three closets that used to contain their junk and now we're down to one room and one closet! We may need to weed out some more to make it all fit! FINE BY ME. The less junk the better, I say! Okay, I'm really done now. Have a great Monday!!!

~Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh~

Posted by cokelady

That was a great big sigh of exhaustion mingled with satisfaction, in case you couldn't tell. ;-)

Life has been soooooo hectic around here, but things I'm finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel. I wasn't sure I'd ever reach that point! Tuesday was spent unpacking all of the junk that we'd had with us while we were living in the motel and somehow that "little" project managed to trash the entire house. Every room that had previously been put in order was slung back into utter chaos. It was a miserable feeling to have lost everything that I had achieved! It's just sort of the way things happened. I threw some clothes in a suitcase that night and fell into bed in a very, very messy house.

We left early the next morning for Andrews, Texas: The Move, Part 2. Actually, it's probably more like Part 8 or 9, but it was our second (and final!!!) trip back to Texas to get our belongings. We got into town and I went by the old house to meet the new owners. Just something I wanted to do. The lady was soooooo nice and seemed genuinely excited to meet me, too. She took me through the house and I was amazed--it looked almost like our house back in New Mexico! They haven't gotten settled yet and there were boxes here and there and still no furniture in the living room or den. Weird. My red kitchen is now sea foam green, which is kind of bizarre. She said she just didn't know what to do with the red since everything she has is green. I didn't think to ask her how many coats of paint it took to cover over the red! Ha! It couldn't have been fun!!! Anyway, she said she loves everything else in the house and doesn't intend to change a thing. She did take the bars out of the windows in the boys' room. (The inspector said it would be a good idea--in all the time we lived there we never thought about having our boys barred into a room in the midst of a fire or some such emergency! Ha!) She said she's thought about changing the wallpaper boarder in there as well, but every time she mentions it everybody goes nuts--"No! The wanted posters are great--that's so cool!" Ha! So I guess even that will stay put for a while. Anyway, it was fun to meet Cara and be able to see the house again. :-)

I then drove out to Aunt Sue's house and left two children and a dog (Sam had ridden with James in the moving truck from Hobbs), then headed back to the storage units. Sam & Tammy showed up just after James and I got there. We emptied Door #1 into the moving truck and hauled it all over to Sam & Tammy's garage since it was all stuff that we were getting rid of and donating to the Mission Sale in Andrews next month. It FILLED their garage! Should be a good sale! :-) Then we went back and filled the truck up with everything behind Door #2 and Door #3. We had the little moving truck this time and everything we had fit in easily enough.

We then went and picked up our kids and poodle from Aunt Sue and our whole grubby bunch went out to eat at Cassidy's. We usually try to be presentable when we go out in public (a good representation of the Lord and the Church and all that), but there is nothing decent and presentable when you're moving, so we just went anyway! Had a nice dinner, then went back to the Kaufman house, put the kids to bed, and took turns showering. We played 7-11 that night, a new game Sam & Tammy just taught us. I won handily, so it was a good night. :-) Tammy and I stayed up visiting until nearly 2:00 before finally calling it a night.

When I woke up at 8:00 the next morning Tammy was busy in the kitchen, whipping up a fantastic breakfast: bacon, eggs, biscuits, gravy, and apple cinnamon and strawberry muffins. Yum! She is 10 times the breakfast cook that I am. Everything was delicious and we enjoyed a nice breakfast together before Sam had to go to work and we had to head out. THANK YOU AGAIN, SAM & TAMMY, for EVERYTHING!!! All of your help and the fun and--well, just everything! You guys are the bestest! :-)

It was Katie's turn to ride in the moving truck, so I had the boys for the trip home. We got home at about 3:30 that afternoon and got right back to work. I sorted through the boxes that were already in the garage and opened most of them, yanking out a few things here and there to take into the house. I found some lamps and such, so that really helps things feel more homey. I also hung a few pictures on the nasty, grubby walls just because I knew it would make it feel more like home if I could see a few of my old familiar things about. I stacked and re-stacked the boxes in the garage to make more room for all the stuff still in the moving truck. Spent most of the rest of the night unloading the truck and piling it strategically in various places throughout the garage. It actually worked out better than I had anticipated and we have more space to manoeuver in there than I thought we would.

Yesterday I got up early and hit it hard again. The house was still in the state of disarray in which I had left it when we went to Texas. But I knew that Jason was coming over in the afternoon, so that gave me the movitation to make things get done. :-) I worked pretty much up until the minute he got here and had everything except the bathrooms looking really good. For folks who just moved in and have been gone half the time since then, I was pretty pleased!

Jason brought his 7 year old daughter with him so she could meet Katie. Julia seems like a really sweet little girl and she and Katie got along great. They jumped on the trampoline for a few minutes, but it was too cold for them out there so they went and played in the kids' room while we visited with Jason. I'm still just amazed by him. Everything is over with concerning this house--his job is done and he's received his commission and all that... yet he still stopped by to bring us some paperwork and just to check up on us and see how we're doing. We just really, really like him. I told him that we're not clients anymore, we're just friends now and he should stop by any time he's up this way. He said he would and that maybe we could get the kids together to go tubing sometime or maybe he could bring his wife out and we could have a bar-b-que once it warms up or something. :-) That would be great!

Once he left, we sat down for just a few minutes and relaxed for the first time since getting home the day before. Oh, I forgot to mention that Mike had left his refrigerator, stove, and couch here, along with miscellaneous odds and ends throughout the house. When we unloaded all of our stuff from the truck Thursday night, we went ahead and loaded all of his stuff into it. We tried to contact him, but he either hung up on me (?!) or got cut off, so I called his realtor. She got back with us and said that he didn't want any of that junk. So after Jason left yesterday we took the truck down to the dump and ridded ourselves of the all of the things that Mike left behind for us. (Dirt and grime and muck and spiderwebs--along with dead spiders on the walls--excluded, of course. It's going to take a while to rid ourselves of everything he left behind! Ha!) It felt WONDERFUL to have all of that stuff gone!!! Wa-Hoo!!!

After we did that we figured we'd just go on into Albuquerque and return the moving truck and be rid of that, as well. We waited for almost an hour at the Budget place because the computer was confused by our back-to-back truck rentals and didn't want to give us the $150 deposit back twice in the same week. The guy finally convinced the computer to give us $149.99, and he threw in the extra penny. Ha! Crazy.

We went out to eat at Shoney's, then came home and crashed last night. I let the kids watch Moe & the Big Exit on YouTube (!), then sent them to bed. I talked to Mom for a while and James dinked around on the computer before going to bed ourselves.

Today we started out with devotions for the first time in a week or more! I HATE THAT!!! But it felt soooooo good to spend some time reading the Bible together today and singing and praying. ~sigh~ Normal life again! Next week we'll be able to get in 3 days of school before heading to Arizona for the wedding, so that will be good, too.

Hhmmm. Somehow I seem to have left out our stove situation. While I was sorting through the mess at the house on Tuesday, James went to town in search of a new stove for me. Sears was having a 15% off sale, so he found a Kenmore with everything I wanted and more at a good price. (My requirements are #1: glass top, because I'm a sloppy cook and it's easier to clean. #2: self-cleaning oven, because I'm a sloppy cook and have a tendency to spill things. #3: I prefer a speckly looking glass top, because I'm a sloppy cook and the speckles help hide the stains.) The oven he found even had a "hidden coil," so I can't actually make a mess onto the coil itself--it's just smooth on the bottom of the oven. Cool! Anyway, he brought it home that night and we took the old, slimy one out of the house.

We were going to bring the new oven into the house before we started unloading the truck on Thursday afternoon, but when we opened the box we found that the stove was damaged--had a scratch on the top and a big ding in the side. ~sigh~ I spent an hour or more calling every Sears within 50 miles, but nobody had this particular model in stock. And the earliest they could get one in would be March 15th! Can you imagine?! I've already been without a stove since December 19th, you know?! The guy we bought the stove from was sooooo nice though and he talked to his manager and they agreed to let us exchange the damaged stove straight across for an upgrade (wow!) at no extra charge. Wa-Hoo! The new stove should be in this coming Tuesday. I can wait a few more days, just not until March 15th. :-)

That's the latest from here. We woke up to snow this morning, so Katie and Joe are outside building a snowman. There's probably not quite enough snow for that, but they don't know it. James built a nice, cozy fire for me and Hershey is playing with his stuffed duck. Sam is setting the table for lunch. I keep telling him it's only 10:30 and we've got an hour and half until lunchtime, but he's determined to get things ready now. Crazy kid. I decided I'd blog first today and work later. I usually wait until I've worked all day long and am too tired to actually do it! I've been working so hard lately though I figured it would be okay to take the morning off. I intend to get the bathroom closet all cleaned up today so we can actually unpack the bathroom stuff and move in to that room, too. Maybe I'll even get the master bathroom scrubbed up today too, then I can soak in a nice hot bath--in that giant tub tonight! My 30 year old bones would lo-o-o-o-o-o-ove that! :-)

I'll try to get back on here later today and post some pictures of how the house is looking now. It's far from great, but sooooo much better than it's ever been before! Until then...

A Title?! Ha! I Laugh at You!!!

Posted by cokelady

No title could possibly encompass the content that is to follow.

Right now I'm sitting in my new living room, a nice, cozy fire in the wood stove to my left, pine trees swaying in the breeze outside my window, Hershey resting cozily atop the back of the couch... Can't we just leave it at that?! It all sounds so nice and pleasant if I just stop there, doesn't it? Wouldn't that be better that hearing what all has taken place in the past week leading up to this point??? ... Nah!!!

Okay, so where in the world do I start?! We got up last Monday morning and hauled all of our stuff from the motel down to the church and stashed it in the back Sunday School room so we'd have more room in the van for hauling stuff. We headed back up north and met with Jason and Starr and signed our life away for about an hour (no kidding!)--I can't believe how many places you have to sign and initial in order to buy a house. The stack of papers was about two and a half inches deep. Crazy. What ever happened to a good old fashioned hand shake, here's-your-money-thanks-for-the-house-take-care-and-we'll-see-you-around kind of deal?! Good grief.

We finally left the title place and drove the 6 hours back to Andrews. We stopped by to see Sam & Tammy, but could only stay a few minutes because we didn't want to get to Aunt Sue & Uncle Jerry's house too late. Still, it was good to visit with them.

We got to Sue & Jerry's, moved in, and visited for a little while before calling it a night. The next morning we drove down to Odessa to do some running around and get hair cuts for the boys. We went to McAllisters with Stacey afterwards and had a nice time, as always. We had some shopping to do, so we didn't get back to Andrews until about 5:00. We promptly decorated for the big party, then Tammy came to join us and Aunt Sue made tacos for dinner. Afterwards we brought out the birthday cake and got down to business.

A strange way to cut a cake, I know, but Katie and Joe each wanted the piece that had their name on it!

Katie and Joe promptly tore into their presents, their favorites both being the ones the Sam selected for them earlier in the day at the dollar store: hot pink Silly Putty for Katie and a little pirate set for Joe that slings tiny cannon balls out of a miniature cannon.

Aunt Sue had bought these "Balloonies" or some such thing. They're something we all remember from our childhood, but hadn't seen or tried in years. So all of us adults (minus Uncle Jerry--he seemed to think the whole thing rather ludicrous) spent the next 20 minutes or so creating lots of great bubbles and breathing in many a toxic fume. Ha!

Tammy spent the first 15 minutes fighting with her bubble pipe, but finally conquered it and talked it into giving her a bubble.

I took the award for BIGGEST bubble...

But Aunt Sue, naturally, took the award the WEIRDEST one...

Ha! She cracks me up!

This one looked like a brain to me, so I let Sam try it on. He could use one, you know!

It was the kids' birthday party, but this was obviously adult entertainment and we had a blast! :-)

I love the smell of that stuff, but it wasn't until we finally stopped and put it away that I realized I really was feeling a little funny! I was lightheaded and even a little dizzy. I felt kind of like I was dreaming or something. Weird! Oh well, it was fun while it lasted!

Tammy and Aunt Sue and I played games for a little while, then Tammy left and we all called it a night.

The next morning James and I left bright and early to drive the hour over to Hobbs to pick up our moving truck. Aunt Sue watched the kids all day, which was wonderful. Better for us and the kids! We made it back to the storage units in Andrews at about 10:00, I think. Sam & Tammy and Steven all came to help, which was SUCH a blessing!!! We never could have done it without them. We worked long and hard all day long and managed to even enjoy ourselves doing it. That's the true test of friendship. If you can load a moving truck together and still like each other, you're really and truly friends. ;-) Tammy and I work really good together. The guys hauled everything up into the truck, then we would stack and pack them in. The boxes always go in nice and easy, but it gets harder to put the puzzle pieces together once you get to the furniture! Still, we did really good, I think. The only real problem we had was with loading the piano. It suffered some damage when we moved it into storage and it nearly met it's death this time (!), but it actually made it all the way up the ramp without a scratch. As far as I know. :-)

There were several times I wished I had my camera with me that day, but I can't remember any of them except the very last one. James had decided some time ago that we wouldn't be taking the TV with us on this move, so we gave it to Sam & Tammy. It was a great big clunky thing, but Tammy had measured and said it would fit in their cabinet. So Sam wrestled the thing into the front seat of their car. (The toddler bed for Cathy was already in the trunk.) But the TV was so big it barely fit in. Sam pushed and shoved and wallowed the thing around until he thought he had it just right. There were only two small problems: he couldn't shift into reverse (they drive a standard instead of an automatic) and the door wouldn't close. Nothing major. Ha! So we wrapped a cord around the door handle and had Tammy crawl into the back seat, lean up over the TV and hold onto the cord to keep the door from flying wide open. (Are you picturing this?!) The other problem we easily remedied by Sam leaving the car in neutral and me pushing it backwards far enough to be able to make the turn without ramming the storage buildings. I followed them to their house, cracking up at the picture in front of me. The best part of the whole thing was when we passed a cop. Ha! The passenger door is open 6 or 8 inches, Tammy is pretty much laying on top of the TV, holding onto the cord, and she just sort of nonchalantly smiles and twirls the loose strands of hair from her bun with her free hand... Ha! We even passed the cop a second time (he sort of doubled back on us), but for some reason he didn't feel it necessary to stop us. He probably just recognized Sam. Everybody in that whole town knows and loves Sam. Good thing! And after all that, Tammy was wrong--the TV won't fit in their cabinet! Ha!

That night I was sooooo sore and achy. My feet were especially screaming for a rest. But I felt like I needed to spend some time with Uncle Jerry and our "quality time" together usually comes in the form of Eight Ball. We played 6 games. I won 1 and lost 5! Ha! Even the one I won was a fluke. Not a good night for me. At least I had a good excuse--we had a long, hard day of moving, right?! Even that couldn't justify how poorly I played, I'm afraid. Oh well. It was fun nonetheless.

James and Joe got up early and left for Albuquerque in the moving truck at about 7:20 the next morning. The other kids and I were all loaded up and took off in the van at about 8:00, I think. We finally caught up to James and passed him somewhere between Roswell and Clines Corners. We made it up to Sandia Park at about 1:00. I had received and interesting phone call from Jason earlier in the day and... well, this is where everything started to go haywire!!!

Jason said that in all of the excitement, we had all failed to realize that although the closing date on the house was that day (Thursday, the 14th), we didn't actually take possession of the house until the funding went through the next day (Friday, the 15th.) Jason had called and told us that the day before, but we really expected Mike (the interesting character we were buying the house from) to be moved out and that we'd be able to go ahead and move in that day anyway. Mike had been sooooo nice and helpful and agreeable up to that point, so we just assumed... Anyway, Jason said that Mike wasn't out yet and that technically the house wasn't ours until the next day. So we had loaded up a moving truck and driven 6 hours--and Dustin & Jamey were in the middle of their 6 hour drive from Colorado Springs to help us!--and we weren't going to be able to get into the house! Ugh. I called Mike and talked to him myself. He said he, indeed, wasn't out of the house yet and needed more time. He said that we could come park the moving truck at the house and then come back at noon the next day and he'd be out and it would be ours. Not the best of situations, but since we were a day early, how could I complain?! I would've wanted in at 9:00 in the morning to get started, but there's no sense in getting into a dispute over three hours, so I agreed to noon.

I called Dustin and we all met at a motel so we could get rooms for the night. (Crazy! This is not what I had planned at all!!!) Then we loaded up and went to Hometown Buffet because the kids eat for .99 on Thursdays and there's a big doofy bee mascot that goes around giving them balloons and such nonsense. Even gave James a massage. Weird. I didn't want a balloon. And I didn't want a massage. I just wanted a HOUSE! But noooooo--here I am, staying in a motel again!!! ~sigh~ At least we had "company" with us. :-) That helped a lot! In fact, we went to Target and bought a game to play that night. Buzzword I think it was called. It was so-so, but it's always fun if you're with fun people. :-)

The next day we got up and just about went crazy waiting for noon to come. We finally did some running around (the post office and something else...?), then headed up into the mountains. We had lunch at Burger Boy and finished up just in time to make it to the house at noon, as scheduled. Wa-Hooooo!!! I was sooooooo excited!!!

We got to the house and Mike met us at the door. He let us in and I was very disheartened to discover that his grubby couch and chair and great big huge screen TV were all still in the living room, along with miscellaneous junk here and there throughout the house. No biggie though. We can help him finish moving out, then we'll move in. Riiiiiight. In my dreams! Mike then tells us the plan. His new plan, that is. We can have the house from noon until 6:00. At 6:00 he would be sitting right there on that couch watching the race on that TV. He didn't want to see anybody--there would be no distractions--and he and his dogs would be spending the night at the house. At 9:00 the next morning, the house would be ours. I know my chin hit the floor. He asked if that would be okay, but he wasn't really asking. He was just waiting for us to agree to what he had already declared. I waited for James to say something, but he was as dumbfounded as I was. I finally just said, "Okay... Well... Um... Let's go with that for now and if things need to change, we'll let you know."

I was in shock. Total, crazed shock. I grabbed the cell phone and called Jason. I related everything that Mike had just said and he listened quietly until I finished, then said (with more unprofessionalism than I'd ever heard from him before), "WHAT?!" We talked for several minutes and I finally broke down and started crying. We had already forked out $100 for motel rooms the night before and were a full 24 hours behind schedule on the "moving in" project. Dustin & Jamey had driven down from Colorado to help us and none of us had done a single thing but sit and wait around for a whole day! They didn't have all the time in the world--they had to get back on Saturday--and there were some things that we just simply wouldn't be able to do without their help. And now we find out that we can't really move in today either?! And we're supposed to go get motel rooms for another night?! No way!!! Jason was nearly moved to tears too (not really) and said he'd make a few calls and get back to me. So we waited and struggled to figure out what to do. We can't do much moving in when Mike's stuff is still in the house, you know?! All of our living room furniture was in the very back of the moving truck so it would be the first to come off. I planned it that way so we could "build" the living room first and have a place to sit and relax if we needed it. Well, my living room happened to be full of Mike's stuff! How am I supposed to move into that?! To make a long story short (Ha! Ha! Ha! That'll be the day!), after several phone conversations with Jason and with Mike's realtor (who is very nice as well), it was finally determined that the house really and truly was ours that day, not Mike's, and we had every right to move into it and Mike was the one who would have to come up with other arrangements, not us. Well, Mike was none to happy about it. I felt really bad for him--I know he was exhausted and frustrated (moving will do that to you, you know!) and he didn't really have a place to go either for the night... but that doesn't mean this house is still his! And if it weren't for the fact that we had Dustin & Jamey with us and we were on a bit of a tight schedule for unloading the truck and getting it back and what not, I would have been more inclined to let him stay in the house one more night. But the most legitimate reason he had was because he was going to be watching some doofy race at 6:00 and that just wasn't good enough for me to walk away from my own house for another night! So it was a real mess. I was just sick over the whole thing. I felt terrible, but we needed to move in! It was just so miserable knowing that he was so upset. And really... he's not the kind of guy you want to have mad at you! In fact, Jason's advice was to get new locks on the doors... immediately! "Thanks a lot, Jason--you're making me feel a whole lot better about this whole situation!" Ha! I made sure to tell him that if he didnt' hear from us in a few days he should come check on us--we might all be laying dead on the floor or something! Ha! Mike's realtor told me that he was coming back over to get his TV and stuff and that he was probably going to be "a little cranky" (ha!), to just stay out of his way and not talk to him and just let him do his thing. So it was pretty awkward for a while with him here, loading up his stuff and rooting through the closets to get the last of the junk that was still there. He was obviously upset but he actually handled himself rather well, I thought. I didn't feel any fear for our safety or anything! Ha! I really think he's a good guy, he was just so wiped out and frustrated. I'm sure he's over it by now. At least I'm hoping so! ;-)

ANYWAY... while I was on the phone for the first hour or two trying to get things worked out so that we could actually have our house (!), James and Dustin worked on getting my new washer and dryer hooked up. :-) They're not stackable just yet because the dryer vent is too far away, but we'll get that worked out in time.

The next hitch with the "move in" project was in the fact that this house was FILTHY. I mean, beyond filthy. I would dare say I've never seen a house so gross. I knew it was bad, but you don't realize just how bad until you get ready to put your very own things into it! I would describe all of the ways it was gross, but it would take 8 pages at least. Just ask Jamey! Ha! So we had to do at least some cleaning before we could even bring anything in. Jamey and I swept and mopped the living room floors, then she took care of the bedroom floor while we were unloading. Jamey wasn't able to do any of the heavy lifting due to the "growth" inside of her (Dustin keeps saying there's something growing inside of her! Ha!), so that meant she got stuck with the really, really nasty jobs. She scrubbed on the bathroom for an hour or two or three! It was sooooooo gross! It still needs some work, but I was amazed at how clean she was able to get it. I just felt bad that she got stuck with such a gross job! She also cleaned out the nasty kitchen cabinets and pantries and stuff. Yuck. She deserves a prize of some kind!!!

Due to having to clean all along the way, it took us all day to get the truck unloaded. I've always heard that unloading is always so fast and easy. HA! It's a lie, I tell you! There is nothing easy about moving, not one single thing! Every time we do it I scream, "Never again!!! I'm not ever doing this again! I'm going to spend the rest of my life right here!!!" God must not be listening. Then again, perhaps He is! Ha! It was a long and grueling day, but it was fun, too, because of the Hays and all their help. Even Isaac and Aleah were a great help, in that they kept my kids company and thus had them occupied and out of the way most of the day! Mike left the trampoline here, so the kids had a blast playing on that. It was a godsend, I tell you! They were out there for hours. And this is where I found Joe once...

They had a lot of fun, but it was a long, hard day on the kids, too!

James shampooed the carpets (there's only carpet in the kids' closet and in the master bedroom and closet) because he's a better carpet shampooer than I am, so I helped Dustin build the beds in the kids' room. Katie's bed never has had slats and we had a temporary fix back in Andrews, but nothing to work with here, so nobody could actually sleep on that bed. We got the boys' beds put together and Isaac and Aleah slept there. Dustin and Jamey just slept on the mattress from Katie's bed on the floor. Our kids were sacked out all over the living room, so James and I threw our mattress down in the floor and slept there with kids scattered here and there.

The next morning the guys got up and took the truck back to the Budget place in Albuquerque. I planned on running to the store for some breakfast items, but discovered we had been left with no keys to the one vehicle remaining at the house! So we called the guys and had them bring breakfast back. I got busy putting shelf paper into the cabinets so I'd be able to unload the 42 kitchen boxes. (It's AMAZING how much stuff goes in a kitchen!) We had breakfast, then James went back to Albuquerque for some more supplies, but don't as me what. Dustin and I got busy building James' and my bed and moving the furniture into that room. Jamey helped me make the bed up and I don't remember what all we did after that. I know that Dustin tried to hook up the ice machine, but it kept leaking. James has tried it since then (a total of three times, I think), but it just keeps leaking. Anyway, James brought KFC back for lunch when he came, so we enjoyed another non-home-cooked meal together. ;-) Dustin & Jamey left in the early afternoon to drive back to Colorado. Before I forget, let me just say publicly...

DUSTIN & JAMEY HAYS ARE THE MOST WONDERFUL PEOPLE IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD!!!

There, I said it. Even with Dustin's name in there. It is a huge departure from the sarcastic and taunting relationship I've had with him these 12 years (12 years--is that bizarre, or what?!), but I just can't possibly say anything mean about him after all of the help he was to us this past weekend. James and I would STILL be unloading that truck if it wasn't for him and Jamey and their help. I'm banking on the fact that Dustin doesn't frequent the blogs when I say this (Jamey, don't you dare tell him!), but he has proven himself to be a man's man in every possible way! I was amazed at the things he was able to do. Most specifically, he almost single-handedly got that piano of mine down the ramp on the dolly without a single moment of panic (on his part or mine! Ha!) or anything close to disaster. That's a first with that piano! And we usually have one or two more adults than we did this time. In any case, I am sooooooo thankful that they were here. There is just absolutely no way we could have managed without them--both of them. Just like Sam & Tammy on the other end--we absolutely could not of gotten that truck loaded without their help. Several times! I'd probably still be packing up the Andrews house were it not for Tammy's assistance! Ha! So let me say as well...

SAM & TAMMY KAUFMAN ARE ALSO THE MOST WONDERFUL PEOPLE IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!!

~sigh~ What wonderful friends we have. The Church of God is just full of the most amazing people around. We're soooooooo blessed!

Anyway... After Dustin & Jamey left on Saturday afternoon I made the mistake of sitting down. It took me 20 minutes to pull myself out of that chair, and it wasn't easy even then! Every bone and muscle in my whole body hurt. Moving is not for sissies, that's for sure. I felt so old!!! Dustin kept reminding me that I am, indeed, just that. But I saw him hobbling around a little himself and Jamey says he was doing plenty of his own moaning and groaning. :-) Anyway, I spent the rest of that day working on the kids' room and closet. I know that's a strange place to start when there's so much to be done, but I just felt like it might help if they had a room that was all put together and all (or at least most!) of their usual stuff within reach. So I unpacked boxes and found lots of their clothes (still looking for Katie's though!) and toys and found a place for pretty much everything. There are several boxes that I stacked in the closet because they're full of decor--which is pointless to put up on those hot pink and blue walls of theirs! Ha! It'll have to wait until we get some remodeling done. So here are a few pictures of what their crazy room looks like right now...

I really don't think Matt Dillon would appreciate the paint job in that room, but what can we do?! I had plans of painting that room right away--like, our very first project here. But upon further investigation, I think that pink and blue paint is probably the cleanest stuff in the whole house! There are so many other things that totally gross me out and will have to be dealt with first. So I think the kids may be stuck with that crazy room for a while! Ha!

We all slept long and solid Saturday night and woke bright and early yesterday. I was able to get about an hour's worth of work done in the kitchen before getting ready for church. We had a really good service and I had 8 kids in my Sunday School class. I had absolutely NO time to prepare, but it just so happens that we only got through half of last week's class, so I was able to do part two yesterday. :-)

After service we went out to eat, then did some running around. James needed to buy a new modem so we could get our Internet hooked up, so we tried 2 or 3 stores before we found the right one. We did one or two other things, then went to Wal-Mart and walked the aisles in search of all the things for our kitchen that we don't have anymore. Of course, I didn't have the kitchen unpacked yet, so we really didn't know what we have and don't have! It gave us something to do anyway. :-)

We got back to the church a little bit early and loaded up all of the stuff we had left there last week. Sister Sally was sick and unable to come do her ABM service, so James pulled out an old CPMA service with tons of transparencies and scriptures about the Church in prophecy and so on. I think everybody really enjoyed it.

After church we headed home to a lonely poodle who had been left alone for the first time in weeks and weeks--for 11 whole hours! With no dog door like he's used to. But he was fine and there were no problems in the house. :-) He is such a good dog. And sooooo happy to see us! That dog is LOVING being up in the mountains. He has spent so much time outside--no doubt making up for all that time he was stuck in that little motel room! Ah yes, I forgot to mention that he got out on Saturday. Ggrrr. I wasn't there at the time, so I couldn't give that "GET BACK HERE OR YOU'RE DEAD MEAT" scream that he's finally started heeding. I had to go track him down and drag him home--and take the long route to do it. I know one thing, if he gets out one too many times up here he's a goner. I must've seen 42 dogs before I got him back to the house, and I heard twice that many--and every one of them is at least 5 times Hershey's size! He's got to be the only poodle within 30 miles! Ha! He'll be a nice little brunch for some husky or mastiff or something if he's not careful!

I was so worn out last night when we got home. I worked for just a little while in the kitchen, but gave up and went to bed at about 9:00! I had been feeling pretty sick all day anyway and the rest did me good. I was feeling much, much better when I woke up this morning. I worked throughout the day and was finally able to get the kitchen all unpacked and found a place for pretty much everything. I got it all cleaned up and actually found all of the countertops for the very first time since Friday afternoon! That feels soooooo much better! Of course, there are now stacks and piles of more STUFF all over the floor in there because we emptied out our dirty, nasty, filthy van that was packed full of all that STUFF. Ugh. That will be tomorrow's project. That and our bedroom. It's getting a little out of control in there! I've got to get all of the nasty cobwebs vacuumed out of the closet (I'm telling you, it is GROTESQUE!!!) and the shelves washed down before we can really move an of our stuff in permanent-like, so it'll take some time. Then I've got to figure out what to do in the bathrooms. Both of them. YUCK-O. I'm still SOOOOO thankful for Jamey every time I go into the bathroom that she cleaned. (I refuse to use the other one until I get a chance to scrub it down, too!) JAMEY, YOU'RE MY HERO!!! :-)

Okay, now I've spent wa-a-a-a-a-ay too much time blogging and I am soooooo tired again. I'm going to hit the hay. But there you have it. I'm sure there are lots of holes in action that I've forgotten to write about, but this is way plenty, don't you think?! In the end, all that matters is that we're in our very own home. Not a motel room, a real home. And not Mike's home (!), ours. :-) And I'm a happy camper. In fact, some parts of this house are still dirty enough I even feel like I'm camping! Ha! It'll all come together in time. Again, HUGE thank-you's to Sam & Tammy and Dustin & Jamey and Aunt Sue and Steven and all who have made this move soooooo much easier for us. I love you's all!!! :-)

The Weary Traveler-No-More,

P.S. -- Ah, yes. This is the picture that I took from our front porch when I woke up our first morning here. Almost makes it worth all the hassle, doesn't it? ;-)

Well... almost. ;-)

TONIGHT IS OUR VERY LAST NIGHT IN ROOM 132 AT THE CROSSLANDS ECONOMY STUDIOS!!! Wa-Hoooooooo!!!! I am soooooooooo excited! You know what this means, don't you?! It means we're MOVING! Really and truly! Fully! Completely! Like, I'm gonna have a true-blue house again!!! No more going batty in an itty-bitty room with stiff beds, no oven, no tub... I'll stop. I've been really good about not dwelling on the negative while we've been here, so why magnify it now? :-) Honestly, it's just been some memory making time for our family and we haven't "suffered" at all... except on those days when we were cooped up all day long without getting out and about! It's been great, but I'm not going to miss it here. And I'm certainly not going to miss Hershey's early morning ricochetting from the door to the bed and back again "I wanna go out" routine. And I'm not going to miss running him and the kids around the motel for exercise and fresh air. I'm not going to miss having a table with only two chairs at which to feed my three children. I am going to miss Dylan. He's a really nice kid who works the front desk most nights. Okay, so I'm not really going to miss him, but he's been one of the nicer parts of our stay here! Ha!

Saturday was a good, productive day for us. We fed the kids some cereal, then loaded up and went down to the U-Haul place and rented their smallest truck. We went to Sears and picked up my brand-spankin' new front loading washing machine and matching dryer :-) :-) :-) and went to Shoney's for lunch. They have a breakfast bar until 2:00 on weekends (weird), so the kids had breakfast for a 2nd time that day.

After lunch we drove to the far western edge of Albuquerque to pick up our dining table, chairs, hutch and wine rack. (Ha! That still cracks me up! --We've been sure to mention how we'll be using it for "lumber" just so nobody gets the wrong idea!) We drove back through Albuquerque and out the east end of town and up to Cedar Crest to pick up the chuckwagon table and stools. (I'll post pictures of it once we get it all set up, Jay!) We went up to the house, but we weren't sure anybody was home. The yard is fenced and Mike (the guy we're purchasing from) has two big, scary dogs. They are plenty friendly when he's around, but not trustworthy otherwise. We tried calling him, but there was no answer and his voice mailbox was full. (I hear it's been full for weeks now.) We called Jason (he's been able to fix all of our other problems, why not this one?! Ha!), but he didn't pick up. I called Mike's realtor and was trying to get some info from her on where to find him when suddenly he was outside with his daughter jumping on the trampoline! We'd been calling him and various other people and honking the horn and whatnot for 15 minutes and he'd been there the whole time! Anyway, he let us in (and happened to mention in passing how the guy came to read the meter one day and let himself in and one of the dogs "purt near chewed his leg off 'fore I got home..." SO glad we didn't open the gate to knock on the door! Ha!) and helped us unload our junk into the garage. That guy... Ha! I can't begin to describe him!!! He is just absolutely one of a kind. He's rough and tough and gritty and has a deep, raspy voice. He's very... non-pretentious, shall we say?! He's very old fashioned and could easily live off the land with no supplies to start with. In fact, he told us that once he rids himself of a house payment he's going to move up to the acreage he has in Colorado and build himself a house. "There's deer there--you can eat them--and there's a stream goin' through it with all the trout you could need and you can grow your own vegetables..." And he'll do it, too. Every bit of it. And probably never step foot in a store or see another human being for the rest of his life. Ha! He has a truck that is jacked up so high on HUGE wheels that it barely (like, quarter of an inch to spare) fits into the garage--it's almost too tall. The truck is green and white and all beat up. And it has no doors. And the seats are seats from a go-cart or something! Ha! He also has a little tiny motorcycle that can't stand more than 18" off the ground (at the seat) that he rides all over the place. He's a big guy--I can't imagine how hilarious it must look! And he uses the word "wicked" to describe everything. He loved our chuckwagon table. "That's cool, dude. Wicked cool!" He was telling us about how many dumb drivers slide off into the ditch in front of the house in the winter time. "They come around that bend there going wicked fast, man!" Ha! That giant truck of his (he has a name for it, but I can't remember... I think it's "The Creature" or something!) has a winch (ha! I almost wrote WENCH) on the front of it and he declares he's probably made 3 or 4 thousand dollars just pulling people out of that ditch. He says in the wintertime he'll drive up the mountain a ways and just park there. "You wait long enough and some idiot's gonna come get hisself stuck in a snowbank--I'cn make 2, 3 hundred dollars a day just haulin' idiots outta the ditch. Wicked good money, man!" Ha! I'm telling you, he is hilarious!!! It's been so great getting to know him a little bit. He's a little odd, sure, but he's just so simple and old fashioned and... well, it's like he walked straight out of Gunsmoke or something. Except for his vehicles and over-use of the word "wicked," that is! Ha!

James decided we'd go to Cracker Barrel for dinner after we took the U-Haul back. Joe ordered breakfast, making that his third breakfast of the day. You've never seen a kid so excited about eating. That kid loves to eat and he does love breakfast--and the thought of three in one day was nearly enough to make him bust. Literally! Ha! Cracker Barrel is so expensive, until you learn how to order. The 3 kids split 2 kids meals between them, I order a kids meal, and James has been ordering the 4-sides thing. $20 for all five of us. And it makes for a very, very happy husband and a very, very, very happy Joe. :-)

We spent last night studying and preparing for our services today. I needed to put together a Sunday School lesson and craft for the kids and also my WMB service for tonight. I never, ever re-use lessons that I've already taught, but I was in a real jam with this service and out of time to prepare when James discovered that I had 4 or 5 of WMB lessons saved on the laptop. There was one from February of 2004, I think, and it was about love and Valentines Day and all that. I felt like a failure resorting to that, but didn't know what else to do! Anyway...

This morning we got up and got ready for church, then ran to Wal-Mart to get a few supplies for my SS class and some desert and chili to take to the pot-luck after church. (I can't wait until I have a real kitchen and can take part in the next put-luck--I was so embarrassed today!) We went to church and had a really good service. Sunday School went well, I thought. It was our three kids, then three other siblings who have never been before. It was great! And I think the other kids enjoyed it and acted excited about coming back. Song service was good, then James preached a message and talked about God, the Creator. It was good. We had several visitors again today and it was nice to have them there for the pot-luck, too. There are some girls (three sisters, ages 18-26, I think) who I especially have a burden for. I pray they'll keep coming and that the Lord will truly save them.

After the pot-luck we went back to Wal-Mart (can you imagine?! Before church AND after church?!) because there were a few things we needed that we just didn't have time to get when we were there in the morning. We also went to Staples so we could have my WMB lesson printed off. (Can't wait to have our office stuff set up again!) We went back to the room and had time for a little nap (a desperately needed one!) before heading back to church. We had some visitors again tonight (one of the three girls I mentioned and the three kids who were in Sunday School this morning), so that was exciting. It's very rare that you have visitors on a Sunday night around here. You might get 30 of them in the morning, but that's the only time they come. It's weird. Anyway, we were glad they were there tonight and I felt like the Lord really helped us, rehashed lesson or not. ;-)

We came "home" to the motel and I started packing up! :-) Oh--I missed someting! After we went to Wal-Mart (the second time, that is) we drove around behind some businesses until we found what we were looking for--and I sent my husband dumpster diving! HA! Of all of the times to not have my camera with me! There was James Horne, all duded up in his Sunday best, rumaging through the big green, smelly dumpster... Those who know James already know that it wasn't nearly as bad as I make it sound. He just yanked a few cardboard boxes off the top for me. :-) We have so much STUFF in this room and I didn't want to just throw it into the van by the armful, so the boxes helped a lot. I've got everything pretty much packed up... now we're trying to figure out what to do with it! It's just stupid to haul all of this junk (and there is a lot!!!) back to Andrews, only to turn around and haul it all right back to Albuquerque! We're going to need all of the space in the van we can get, you know?! So I think we've got a plan to leave it here in town and retrieve it when we get back. We'll have to make a phone call or two in the morning to make sure it'll work out, but I'm pretty sure it won't be a problem. Then we can take just the one suitcase with us that we'll be needing and have all that extra storage space in the van to MOVE with. :-)

We'll get to Andrews tomorrow sometime, go to Odessa for haircuts from Aunt Stacey on Tuesday (the boys look terrible!), then throw a party together for Kate & Joe that night (haven't even thought about birthday presents yet!), and then away we go!!! Loading the moving truck and heading west again! Wa-Hoooo!!! :-) Life is so grand. It may be a while before I get a chance to blog again. It'll be pretty chaotic for a while and it's only going to get a lot worse before it gets better, even once we get to our new house. I mean, eventually this house is going to work GREAT for us. But to start with, we're going to be short one bedroom, one den, two offices, and a shed from what we're used to! So I'm sure it's going to be pretty confusing figuring out what goes where! Ha! Should prove to be quite an adventure! :-) I'm just going to be so happy to have a house. A real, live house of my very own! With a yard for my kids and dog!!! ~sigh~ It's going to be so great. :-) Keep us in your prayers!!!

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Wednesday was the longest day of my life. Probably not, but it felt like it at the time. We had our usual morning: breakfast, devotions, school. In the meantime, James took the van to the shop. We can contemplated trading it in for a 4x4 (which we do need now), but have since decided it would be best to keep the van as our primary family vehicle and whatever James gets as his vehicle will be 4x4—and large enough to fit all 5 of us if necessary. So since we’re keeping the van, we decided to do some of those necessary things that have to be done every so often. New tires, new water pump (the old one was corroded and about to go out), new break pads on the front and something done to the rotors on the back (or vise versa?) and… I think that was it. No—the rattle. We’ve had a terrible rattle for a few months now. A bolt had broken somewhere and wasn’t holding something in place tightly, so they fixed that, too. As you can imagine, all of this work took all day.

In the meantime, the kids and I were back at the motel room going nuts!!! Ha! It was after 5:00 by the time James finally made it back with the van and we were all crawling up the walls. Breakfast, devotions and school only takes us until about noon. After that I let the kids watch a few episodes of Wanted. Four, to be exact! Then we got books and sat around and read for a while. Then we went for another run around the motel. (We’d all gone running once earlier in the day, too.) When James got back it was utter chaos. One kid in gladiator garb stabbing another in cowboy duds and a girl in a puffy pink robe giving orders to both of them. A mother sitting on the bed with that “next time YOU’RE staying in the room with 3 kids and a dog while I spend all day sitting in a nice, peaceful waiting room with magazines all day” look. ;-) We loaded up and went out to eat. Don’t ask where. I’m so tired of eating out. Everything tastes the same anymore. I can’t wait to have an oven again!!!

After our meal we went to the Wal-Mart for milk and a few odds and ends. Then it was back to the motel room. All of the kids were actually asleep by 9:00 that night. Amazing! This motel life has gotten us all screwed up. Everybody is wide awake until 11:00 or midnight most nights (!), then they sleep in until 9:00 the next morning! It’s terrible. So it was nice to have a regular asleep-by-9:00-and-up-again-at-7:30 experience. It was a glimmer of normal life. ;-)

Yesterday was almost as cabin feverish as Wednesday. Breakfast, devotions and school while James was out taking care of some business… but for some reason we got a really late start on school. In fact, I don’t think we even started school until after lunch! So it drug on through the afternoon and (due to some attitude issues concerning the math work and some additional assignments because of it!) we didn’t finish up and get out of the room until about 4:00. ~sigh~ The days spent entirely at the motel are rough.

We went and looked at some more vehicles that night, trying to figure out what James needs for his running around, but what will work for all of us if necessary—that’s a 4x4. We’ll find something in time, but it’s just not something you rush into, you know?! At least we don’t!

Today we got up and had breakfast and devotions, then we all hopped in the van and headed down to the DMV to finish registering the van. We now have a bright yellow license plate with a hot air balloon on it. Weird! After that we headed to Sears to check out the appliances. We sold our washer, dryer and freezer when we moved, and of course the stove stayed with the house. I’ve been fantasizing about one of those awesome front loading washing machines for some time now, but it’s been only a fun dream. Do you know how much those things cost?! We’ve been really good about being frugal with the furniture we’ve been buying and even while looking at vehicles. So… James decided we could splurge on the washer and dryer! Wa-Hoo! We went middle of the road, actually. Did you know you can spend $1300 or more—for just a washer?! Whoa!!! There is NO WAY. Not even when it’s fantastically red and beautiful. (I would have loved to have had a bright red washer and dryer—it would actually be fun to do laundry! Ha!) I guess when I look at that price you could say that we went lower-middle of the road. ;-) Still, it’s a big step up from anything I’ve ever had before and I’m so excited! Wa-Hoo! I think I’ll be able to stack the washer and dryer, leaving extra room for a pantry! Double Wa-Hoo! Life is good. :-)

We went back to the room and took a nap because we’ll have a pretty late night tonight. We’re driving down to Hatch right now to be with them in Revival. It’s a weekend revival and this is the only night we could make it.

Tomorrow we have a small truck reserved so we can go pick up our new washer and dryer, then go pick up the table, chairs, hutch and wine rack (ha!) we bought from that guy last week, then drive up to Cedar Crest and pick up the chuckwagon table and take them all up and dump them off at the house. We don’t close on the house until Thursday (if all goes as planned, of course!), but Mike (the seller) has been soooooo great about everything and he said it would be fine for us to go ahead and move some this stuff in a few days early. :-) How exciting!!!

James just accused me of writing an encyclopedia blog. “That’s just way too long—who wants to read that?!” Hey, you don’t have to read it, you know! I’m doing this as much for my own sake as anybody else’s! Besides, I’m bored. The kids are asleep in the back seat and James is deep in thought. That leaves me alone with the laptop. But I think I’ll bring this to a close and make that man of mine be sociable. :-)

Later!

--Me again. It’s nearly midnight now and we’re nearing Albuquerque. We had a wonderful service in Hatch and Brother Olivarez preached a great message. Oh, how I love going to that church! I’ve never been there but I’ve been deeply blessed. James says there were probably over 50 people there tonight. Praise the Lord! The people there are so very precious and we love them dearly. We are just soooooo blessed to be a part of the Church of God, in this region in particular! :-)

--Oh! Emilee! You should see Sophia! She is soooooooo cute! She’s nearly 7 months along now and she’s got this perfect (however still tiny) bulge—she’s just adorable! I thought of you and wished I would have thought to take my camera with me tonight. She’s feeling great (praise the Lord!) and is thankful for all of the prayers. :-)
